Depending on when you go Herkimer, NY has a humid continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. The average temperature in January, the coldest month, is around 24°F while the average temperature in July, the warmest month, is around 69°F. Precipitation is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year with an average of 44 inches annually. Snowfall averages around 60 inches per year and typically occurs from late November through early April. If you plan on adding a digging excursion with your camping trip the best months to dig in my opinion are May-Oct but May - June seem to be the best to prevent too much heat. Fall digging is also nice.
This depends on the camp site that you choose. We currently have two different site choices available. The Cabin site which is creek side and provides a fire pit offers more protection from the weather as it is a bare bones Amish built cabin. There are no facilities yet in the cabin but it has windows and doors and is a nice place to set up camp.
The Maple Campsite is up top a short walk and more tucked away. This is a bare bones site with just a cleared farming road and path to the site. You would be responsible for packing in and packing out but we do offer a fire pit and full private access to the land and all it offers.
YES! We have all different types of wildlife on the property. From deer to snakes, bees and birds you will have the full nature experience. You do not need to worry about major predators or issues with large animals. It is very rare to sight a black bear but it can happen.
Due to wanting to keep the experience private and exclusive there will never be more than 1 large group or 2 small groups booked at a time on the land. A large group consists of 6 or more people. We do accommodate for larger groups but we would block out the entire property for this group.
At SiO2 Mountain we just as you to be considerate and respectful of the environment around you. We ask you to keep standard quiet hours from 10PM - 7AM and pack up your site so there is leave no trace principles in place. We ask you kindly pack in supplies that you may want or need and pack out any trash or debris that your trip might have created. There is absolutely no hunting at any time on the property and we ask that you never interfere with the wildlife or waterways.
Aside from your general camping supply list you may want to consider a few extra things for this property. Muckers or waterproof shoes would be a huge benefit because there are two beautiful creeks to explore plus a waterfall you can spend time at. The easiest way to get to the waterfall is to walk the creek and so waterproof boots or shoes are very convenient to have with you. If you are trying to stay plugged in please know we do not have any power on the land to access. You may want to bring an additional power supply of some sort if you would like to use electric in any way. There are also no formal bathroom facilities on the land. We do have an outhouse and we are working on framing in an off-grid bathroom in the cabin but for now it is normal camping rules. There are no shower facilities.
